A great complete pressing of this classic Tull rarity in great condition!

This Was is the debut album of Jethro Tull, released in 1968. Recorded at a cost of only £1200 GBP, the album received generally favourable reviews and sold well upon its release. In the documentary film of the Woodstock Festival, portions of the songs "Beggar's Farm" and "Serenade to a Cuckoo" may be heard on the PA system, indicating the level of notice the album achieved in the United States. The album reached number 10 on the UK Album Chart and number 62 on the Billboard 200. It is now considered one of the seminal lps of the era and one of the greatest debut albums ever.

While vocalist Ian Anderson's creative vision largely shaped Jethro Tull's later albums, on This Was Anderson shared songwriting duties with Tull's guitarist Mick Abrahams. In part due to Abrahams' influence, the album incorporates more rhythm and blues and jazz influences than the progressive rock the band later became known for.

This Was also contains the only Jethro Tull lead vocal not performed by Ian Anderson on a studio album, "Move On Alone". Mick Abrahams, the song's author, provides vocals on the track; David Palmer provided the horn arrangement. Abrahams left Jethro Tull following the album's completion in a dispute over "musical differences". so the album's title may be viewed as a wry commentary on his departure.

The song "Dharma for One", a staple of Tull's early concerts (usually incorporating an extended drum solo by Clive Bunker), was later covered by Ekseption, Pesky Gee! and The Ides of March.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO

THIS WAS is JETHRO TULL'S first album and is often cited as one of the greatest debut albums of all time. It is also a sensitive piece of vinyl, worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on the many musically complex sections. I am a huge fan of this album , and also highly critical of the audio performance. I cant stand listening to a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound. And like most Tull albums there is a very wide mix of music, stylistically and audio wise, making it near impossible to find original pressings that are not covered in surface noise, pops and clicks.

I am very pleased to say that this rare 1st MONO pressing plays through with great, bright audio. This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. The channels are clean and unstressed and there is not a hint of distortion on the record. The occasional light static tic, a few isolated light clicks here and there, some light occasional surface sound, but nothing prominent or repetitive. The audio plays through with brilliant strong and clear sound. This is a great 1st press of this Tull classic, and even with a few spots of interference in the form of light static, it is a great listen. I will give a detailed account below:

This great sounding record starts with surprisingly little static in that famous intro. Building up with ' My Sunday Feeling ' this great track starts the record with great audio, just great bright sound. I did notice some light very occasional static but certainly nothing obvious. 'Some Day the Sun Wont Shine for You', a very quite sparse blues track continuous the high standard, with some light occasional static only, and nothing obtrusive. The quiet intro plays with great clear sound.

The jazzy 'Beggars Farm ', often prone to heavy wear, here sounds great. No pops or clicks during the music. Just amazing clear sound, some very light occasional static and a few random light static tics . 'Move On Alone' also sounds great, with superb audio. A near silent intro, it plays with great sound, with barely any detectable background static, and this is another quiet track always prone to heavy static and loud pops and clicks. None here, just truly incredible sound .

Another delicate Tull classic, 'Serenade to a Cuckoo', just sounds fantastic, so great to hear such amazing audio giving justice to such classic music. A great audio performance, with some static between tracks, and a little static during the music in the form of a bit of faint, occasional, background static, there are no loud pops or clicks and great clear sound. Superb sound from this original pressing, and this is a relatively sparse track with lots of room for heavy surface sound. There is some here but nothing dominant, just a few tics and some background sound. Its not quite crystal clear sound, but there are no loud pops or clicks and the audio is really bright and clear, with no loss of clarity, any surface sound is very much in the distance. A great listen for this great record.

Side 2. of

This Was starts with very little static during the run ins, and then the music kicks in with great pitch and clarity as 'Dharma for One' unfolds with its many complex sections. No noise, no obvious interference's . A couple of light static tics only . The track 'Its Breaking Me Up ' plays without a single loud pop or click throughout. Here the sound is deep and powerful, and plays with great clarity and very little detectable static. Amazing for such a quiet track . 'Cats Squirrel ' sounds amazing , with a very light pop, a couple of very light tics and some light static only. The amazing guitar solo really shows how ahead of its time this album was, released two years before Black Sabbaths first album. In the long quiet intro to 'A Song For Jeffery ', it plays with no distortion, NO hiss, great clear audio, even during the quietest sections . T here is a single very light click, a couple of light tics, and not a hint of distortion.

The very short 'Round' plays just really well, with clear sound a couple of tics and some light background static only. G reat clear sound and there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on any tracks of this vinyl. T his pressing really sounds great, and its difficult to find original Mono vinyls of THIS WAS that sounds like this.

The record plays with staggering power, great audio some light interference only. There is the occasional dust tic, a few light very pops and clicks , but they are low level and certainly dominant .

The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power. As is the same with the bass and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. On the whole this lp plays with superb, bright audio. I have given a detailed account and l believe I have been unforgiving in pointing out the slightest audio interference on what is a great 1st ever pressing of this rare example.

I would give an overall audio grading of EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS!

THE RECORD – Visual Grading

A stunning piece of heavy vinyl, this rare 1st press is really thick and chunky, with amazing deep clear grooves. It has been played carefully and does have a few light marks, but its a great example that sounds terrific. When viewed directly under a spot light faint whispy paper handling marks and a few light hairlines can be seen, and they are light. A great example.

Graded atEXCELLENT!

THE LABELS

A great set of textured labels. T here are a few ultra light spindle traces to be found. These are a great pair of labels . A lovely set, they have no spindle wear, and certainly no writing, finer prints or other marks.

G raded at EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT!

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE COVER

The laminated covers of This Was had a fair chance of survival , but the lamination didn't go right to the opening edges on the early pressings, so there was still a huge amount of room for serious wear. These covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and major scuffs along the edges, the inner, unlaminated gatefold also usually being heavily worn. The Spines are nearly always torn at the ends, worn, scuffed and definitely flattened . And they are nearly always heavily rubbed , cracked and covered with grubby marks. Not this one!

This 1st MONO pressing comes with its original cover in great condition . And don't be fooled, these 1st press covers are completely different to all other covers from the UK pressings of THIS WAS . These covers themselves are rare, and so hard to find with out heavily worn edges, corners and surfaces. And this has the widest spine variation , still square, true and un flattened.

The Cover has some light wear to the corners, and a little rubbing along the edges, and that is virtually un heard of for This Was . The opening edges are very square and un frayed, with barely any detectable ring wear on either the rear or front cover, again unheard of. The back cover is nice and clean, again with a very slight impression of the vinyl. The inside Gatefold is clean and shows light handling marks only . The Spine shows some slight wear to the corners, with a couple of light creases and NO laminate loss . And, this is an ORIGINAL 1st EVER Press MONO cover .

G raded at EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS.

THE INNER

Original poly lined flip back inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition. No tears, stains, just some light creasing and NO seem splits at all!!!

So hard to find with out heavy wear, graffiti, tears and splitting. A great example.

RARITY

This is an unbelievable rarity, a 1st ever UK pressing of THIS WAS without the standard Made in Gt Britain text.

Finding an original MONO UK pressing of THIS WAS in great condition is extremely rare indeed. It is one of the hardest pieces of vinyl from the late 1960's to find with great audio. The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this is with out doubt a great WIDE SPINE example. Finding a great cover like this, with a great piece of vinyl, fantastic!.

A This Was pressing in this type of condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any 1st press examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays well is very rare. An ORIGINAL MONO press, with ORIGINAL Cover and ORIGINAL inner sleeve, all in great condition, with loud clear audio makes this very rare indeed!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
