CAT NO:....

MONO 1968 - DECCA RECORDS U.K LK 4955

LABEL PRESS DETAILS:

ULTRA RARE Mono Press - with the iconic unboxed DECCA labels, ''ffrr" logos, and "FULL FREQUENCY RANGE RECORDING'' - ONLY FOUND ON EARLY PRESSINGS. Deep Matt RED labels with MADE IN ENGLAND text. First pressed 1968.

This is a rare and COMPLETE UK pressing of the great BEGGARS BANQUET. Finding a Complete press in this wonderful condition is very rare indeed and makes this a very special chance to own a genuinely rare early press with brilliant clear sound.

Mono 1st pressings of BEGGARS BANQUET are not only rare, but were recorded with a gritty, earthy sound that meant that the quality of the original press audio often wasn't that clear. Keith Richards wanted a natural sound, meaning that even perfect vinyl specimens could sound blurred.

Finding a clear sounding pressing in great condition is near impossible , and this 1st Mono press is an outstanding example with crystal clear sound.

Beggars Banquet is the seventh British by The Rolling Stones. It was released in December 1968 by Decca Records in the United Kingdom and London Records in the United States. It marked a return to the band's R&B roots, generally viewed as more primal than the conspicuous psychedelia of Their Satanic Majesties Request. It also started the a string of four LPs that is usually regarded as the band's finest work.

Following the long sessions for the previous album in 1967 and the departure of producer and manager Andrew Loog Oldham, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards hired producer Jimmy Miller, who had produced the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. The partnership would prove to be a success and Miller would work with the band until 1973.

In March, the band began recording their new album, aiming for a July release. One of the first tracks cut, "Jumpin' Jack Flash", was released only as a single in May 1968, becoming a major hit.

Beggars Banquet was Brian Jones' last full effort with the Rolling Stones. In addition to his slide guitar on "No Expectations", he played harmonica on "Dear Doctor", "Parachute Woman" (along with Mick Jagger) and "Prodigal Son"; sitar and tambura on "Street Fighting Man"; mellotron on "Jigsaw Puzzle"and "Stray Cat Blues", and sang backing vocals on "Sympathy for the Devil". Jones also played an acoustic guitar part on Sympathy for the Devil, but it is not audible in the final mix of the song.

By June, the sessions were nearly completed in England, with some final overdubbing and mixing to be done in Los Angeles during July. Critics considered the LP as a return to form. It was also a clear commercial success, reaching No. 3 in the UK and No. 5 in the US (on the way to eventual platinum status). in 2003, the album was ranked in the list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album is also featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and is clearly one of the defining moments in music in the 1960's.

A great complete MONO 1st pressing of what is undoubtedly one of the most iconic albums of the 20th century!!!

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO

BEGGARS BANQUET is a musical masterpiece and is also an incredibly sensitive piece of vinyl. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like ‘Sympathy For the Devil’. I am a huge fan of BEGGARS BANQUET , and also a highly critical of the audio performance. I just cant stand to hear a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound, and it is so hard to find a 1st pressing with great audio performance.

I am pleased to say that this rare pressing plays through with great, un disturbed audio. This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. Strong sound free of any loud pops or clicks. Channels are clean and unstressed. It has been hardly played. There is some light occasional static (as found on all vinyls) but it is very light, and the audio is brilliant strong and clear, its is a stunning listen. I will give a detailed account below:

This great sounding 1st stereo press starts with surprisingly little static in run ins and intro to 'Sympathy for the Devil', a loud track that can still be plagued by crackle, hiss and static. Just great clear sound, the track plays superbly with not a single loud click or pop. The audio is superb. Again, the quiet intro to 'No Expectations', a very delicate track also sounds very clear and the whole of the first side really plays with superbly clear audio throughout. Any surface sound is extremely quiet and infrequent. Absolutely no loud pops or clicks, and certainly not even a hint of distortion. Hardly even a noticeable occasional static tic. There is a bit of static and one light pop between the first two tracks, but certainly nothing obtrusive or even that noticeable. 'Dear Doctor' sounds superb, with crystal clear audio, and the raw audio effects that Keith worked so hard at achieving can really be heard here. Its sounds like you are in a basement with the Stones. No pops or clicks.

'Parachute Woman' comes in again with incredibly clear bright sound, I could detect no static and no distortion. I can confirm this whole album plays without a hint of distortion what so ever, and thast incredibly rare for any original Mono 1st pressing of Beggars Banquet. 'Jigsaw Puzzle' ends side 1. with great clear sound. Some very faint, barely audible occasional static only, and no pops or clicks what so ever. Superb.

'Street Fighting Man' kicks in side 2. with amazing clear, largely flawless audio. Any background static I have to strongly state is far in the background, and in no way interferes with any of the music. 'Prodigal Son' also plays superbly, still with no pops or clicks, and absolutely minimal (if any) static. I'm very happy to say that the same goes for the intro to 'Stray Cats Blues'. So often heavily distorted and affected by clicks and hiss, it plays through with amazing clarity and superb bright sound. Virtually no audible static at all, no pops, clicks or even any tics. The long outro plays with just crystal clear audio. Even the stunning 'Factory Girl', such a difficult track to find with clear sound, pays superbly. An amazing audio performance. There is barely any light static during that quiet intro, and any that is there is very light by any standards. 'Salt of the Earth' rounds of the album again with great clear sound. Not a single pop or click and amazing clear audio, this really stunning performance.

This 1st press record plays with staggering power, great audio nothing obtrusive to distract from the over all enjoyment of this great record. Minimal (if any) surface or static noise between the tracks, even in the long quiet sections it is clean, crisp and rich.

The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power and clarity. As is the same with the keyboard layering and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. On the whole this lp plays with superb, clear bright rich audio. The sound quality is consistent and extremely high, I would easily give an overall audio grading at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT!

THE RECORD – Visual Grading

A stunning piece of glossy vinyl, this rare 1st press is really thick and chunky, with amazing deep clear grooves. In daylight it looks largely unmarked. A couple of faint whispy paper handling marks and one ultra faint short sleeve removal hairline only, and need to be seen under an intense spotlight, it cant be seen in normal light. A really stunning example that has been very little played! A really great example. Easily grades at EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

A lovely set of labels. Side 1. has virtually no spindle traces, and side 2. has some light spindle traces only. Absolutely no marks or writing what so ever, and NO brush marks that these labels seem prone to, and no spindle wear. Great all round examples! Easily grades at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.

THE COVER

On 7 June 1968, a photo shoot for the album, with photographer Michael Joseph, was held at Sarum Chase, a mansion in London. On 9 September 1968, an WABC Radio News report stated that the release was delayed due to artwork for the album cover, a California artist's work was considered "too dirty to release". Decca Records in England and London Records in the US rejected the planned cover design – a graffiti-covered lavatory wall. The band initially refused to change the cover, resulting in several months' delay in the release of the album. By November, however, the Rolling Stones gave in, allowing the album to be released in December with a simple white cover imitating an invitation card, complete with an RSVP. For those aware of the cover intrigue, an advertisement in the back of Rolling Stone magazine soon announced that "the Stones want you to have the banned cover" allowing completists to buy the original artwork as a full front and back album slick that they could glue or tape over the released version. Meanwhile, the idea of a plain album cover was also implemented by The Beatles for their eponymous white-sleeved double-album, which was released one month prior to Beggars Banquet. The similarity garnered some accusations of Beatle-esque imitation when Beggars Banquet was finally released. In 1984, the original cover art was released with the initial CD remastering of Beggars Banquet.

The laminated covers of Beggars Banquet are relatively prone to wear. These covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and scuffed along the edges and serious laminate cracks and creasing. The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and scuffed. This Ultra Rare 1st ever press cover is in great condition, with minimal scuffing to the corners, and virtually no rubbing along the edges, and that is virtually un heard of for Beggars Banquet . The opening edges are very square and un frayed, again unheard of. There are a few indentations and scuffs. All round, this is a really nice example, with some very minor handling wear.

This ORIGINAL 1st Press COVER easily g rades at VERY GOOD PLUS.

THE INNER

Original inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition. No tears, stains, just some light creasing and NO seem splits at all!!!

And don't be fooled, these are completely different to all other inner sleeves from the UK pressings of Beggars Banquet . These inners are themselves rare and so hard to find with out heavy wear, graffiti, tears and splitting.

RARITY

Beggars Banquet has been re produced in massive quantities, being one of the most iconic albums of the 20th century. On saying that, MONO pressings were produced in relatively small quantitates, and finding an original UK early press in great condition is unbelievably rare indeed. Its an extremely rare collectable, it is so hard to find a Mono pressing with great audio performance. There are so many quiet passages, it is undoubtedly one of the hardest pieces of vinyl from the early 1970's to find with great audio.

The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is a brilliant example. Finding a great cover like this, with a great piece of vinyl, rare 1st press inner sleeve, fantastic!.

A Beggars Banquet pressing in this type of condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any Beggars Banquet examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays superbly are incredibly rare. An ORIGINAL UK press, with ORIGINAL Press Cover and ORIGINAL inner sleeve, all in great condition, makes this very rare indeed!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
