♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫

If Day at the Races was a sleek, streamlined album, its 1977 successor, News of the World, was its polar opposite, an explosion of styles that didn't seem to hold to any particular center. It's front-loaded with two of Queen's biggest anthems -- the stomping, stadium-filling chant "We Will Rock You" and its triumphant companion, "We Are the Champions" -- which are quickly followed by the ferocious "Sheer Heart Attack," a frenzied rocker that hits harder than anything on the album that shares its name, a remarkable achievement in itself. Three songs, three quick shifts in mood, but that's hardly the end of it. As the News rolls on, you're treated to the arch, campy crooning of "My Melancholy Blues," a shticky blues shuffle in "Sleeping on the Sidewalk," and breezy Latin rhythms on "Who Needs You." Then there's the neo-disco of "Fight from the Inside," which is eclipsed by the mechanical funk of "Get Down, Make Love," a dirty grind that's stripped of sensuality. That cold streak on "Get Down, Make Love" runs through the album as a whole. Despite the explosion of sounds and rhythms, this album doesn't add up to party thanks to that slightly distancing chilly vibe that hangs over the album. Nevertheless, many of these songs work well on their own as entities, so there is plenty to savor here, especially from Brian May. Whether he's doing the strangely subdued eccentric English pop "All Dead, All Dead" or especially the majestic yet nimble rocker "It's Late," he turns in work that gives this album some lightness, which it needs. And that's the reason News of the World was a monster hit despite its coldness -- when it works, it's massive, earth-shaking rock & roll, the sound of a band beginning to revel in its superstardom.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

Among the promotional releases, those which come with publicity kits (various packages comprising of photo inserts; letters of introduction from the label; typewritten biographies and/or discographies, corporate memos, decals, badges and alike) are generally recognized as the earliest, and most important specimens of a given title; literally and figuratively, the templates from which all subsequent copies followed. Some publicity kits are commanding astronomic prices on today’s collectors’ market .

· CONDITION:

· RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►.

(b) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c) The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(d) The album comes with ALL 11 (17 by count) press kit inserts, extras and elements, listed and described above INCLUDING the previously undocumented 4 x 7" postcard.

(e) Press Kit White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 300:1.

(f) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

· COVER (THE GRADING IS FOR THE EXTERNAL, BLACK , PROMO-ONLY "SLIPCASE" COVER; THE REGULAR, INNER COVER IS STILL SEALED INSIDE AND IS STONE MINT , THE ONLY FLAW BEING THE SMALL PROMO CUTOUT HOLE, WHICH ALL KNOWN COPIES OF THIS SET HAD)

THE BLACK 'SLIPCASE' COVER (ENVELOPE) IS VERY NICE - ABOUT VERY GOOD++

- Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams (nothing significant)

- Cover has all four corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

- The cover has a few tiny scratch marks (BARELY VISIBLE)

- Small piece of clear scotch tape noted on the small "buckle" on the back side which locks the slipcase cover (all copies had small piece of tape attached, ensuring that the cover does not accidentally open in transit); this can probably be removed, but we did not attempt to.

- No split seams

- No cut-out (drill) holes.

- No cut-out corners

- No saw-marks or indents

- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

- No yellowing from aging

- No writing

- No stamps

- No peel-off marks

- No stains

- No mold or mildew spots

- No stickers or labels

- No water damage
